Germany electric vehicle subsidy program
Overview
Germany’s electric vehicle (EV) subsidy program, launched in May 2026, has reached a milestone of 100,000 households receiving payments. Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider reported that the initiative has exceeded expectations, particularly in assisting lower-income households. The program, which has a three billion euro allocation, aims to support approximately 800,000 vehicles through 2029 by providing up to 6,000 euros per vehicle for new EVs, certain plug-in hybrids, and range extenders.
As demand remains high, Minister Schneider has assured that funding remains sufficient to continue through 2027. While the government is considering the introduction of European value-added criteria in the future, no short-term changes to the program or restrictions on Chinese-manufactured vehicles are currently planned.
