Germany forest fire risk amid heatwave

A Europe‑wide drought has pushed the Danube and Rhine to their lowest flows since the late 19th century, curtailing navigation and forcing cuts to power generation at nuclear plants in Romania and Hungary. Grain losses of roughly 9 million tonnes and steep drops in cereal yields have been reported, raising food‑price concerns. By mid-August, wildfire risks remained high despite forecasts of a cold front in regions like Essen. While rain was expected to bring cooler temperatures, fire department spokespeople cautioned that rainfall might not be sufficient to fully moisten the dry soil. In the Saale-Orla district, police issued specific advisories against discarding cigarettes, using open flames, or parking vehicles on dry grass to prevent accidental ignitions. Ongoing drought conditions have continued to fuel fires in regions including the Südeifel, Rheinland-Pfalz, and Bavaria. In Isenbügel, Germany, emergency services required significant resources to combat a blaze that was complicated by difficulties with water supply and accessibility.
