The 2026 heatwave in Central Europe set unprecedented meteorological records, characterized by extreme heat, severe drought, and significant human impact. In Germany, the summer was the second warmest on record, with an estimated 16,000 heat-related deaths. As the season transitioned, weather patterns became increasingly volatile. By September 8, severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hail caused widespread damage across Baden-Württemberg. In Treuchtlingen, storms and hail necessitated 13 emergency responses, damaging vehicles, the Marienkirche church windows, and residential roofs. In Freiburg, three people, including two children, were slightly injured by a fallen tree, which also contributed to power outages. In the Konstanz district, fallen trees forced the closure of a railway line between Stahringen and Stockach. Other regions, such as Tuttlingen and Tübingen, reported fallen trees and scaffolding collapses. As the cold front continues to move through the region, Germany is transitioning from subtropical heat to cooler polar air. The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, with precipitation rates potentially reaching 15 liters per square meter in one hour and wind gusts up to 70 km/h, with higher gusts reported in mountainous areas like the Brocken. In Switzerland, unstable air is bringing heavy cloud cover and frequent precipitation, particularly in the Alps and Prealps, with thunderstorms expected in southern Alpine regions. Temperatures in the Swiss lowlands are forecasted to remain between 17 and 20 degrees Celsius. By September 11, unsettled weather persisted across Germany. Northern regions, including Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, faced increasing rain and cloud cover. In Bavaria, a low-pressure system brought rain spreading from Franconia, with possible wind gusts in the Bavarian Forest. Additionally, the DWD issued warnings regarding potential ground frost in raised beds, noting that while stations may report 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, air layers just above the ground could drop below freezing.
