Germany launches experimental quantum communication infrastructure development network
Germany is advancing its quantum communication capabilities through large-scale research and infrastructure initiatives. The QuKomIn project has established an application laboratory in Erlangen to provide a testing environment for eavesdrop-proof data transmission using a hybrid fiber-optic and satellite network. This project is supported by approximately 15 million euros from the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Development and Energy. Concurrently, Following seven years of research, the seven-year QuNET initiative, funded initiative has transitioned into an experimental quantum communication network. Funded by 125 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, has reached its final experimental stage. This initiative Technology, and Spaceflight, the project involves collaboration between the federal government and the states of Bavaria, Berlin, Saxony, and Thuringia. The project aims to demonstrate a cross-state quantum communication network that utilizes Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) to secure communications between government agencies, businesses, and critical infrastructure providers. By using quantum technology, the system can detect eavesdropping attempts and generate encryption keys known only to encrypt data, the sender and receiver, providing security resilient a defense against future cyberattacks, including those from quantum computer attacks. Thuringia’s Minister President Mario Voigt described computers. Key research institutions involved in the resulting network as consortium include the largest quantum communication network currently in practical application. Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF), the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Light (MPL), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU).
