Ghana and Morocco U17 friendly series and WAFU tournament

Overview

Ghana and Morocco’s U17 national teams engaged in a two-match international friendly series in Rabat as preparation for the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship.

In the first match, Ghana’s Black Starlets secured a 2-0 victory with goals from Hope Agbasi and a penalty by Alidu Issah. In the second fixture, Morocco defeated Ghana 2-1 to level the series. Despite playing with ten men following the dismissal of captain Abdul Rafiu Issah, Ghana managed to equalize in the 75th minute via a free-kick from Yaw Acheampong before Morocco secured the win in the final moments of the match.

Following the friendly series, the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship commenced in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, serving as a qualifier for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations. In their opening Group A match, the Black Starlets defeated Togo 1-0. David Kwarteng scored the decisive goal in the seventh minute following a set-piece involving midfielder Abdul Latif Wunzalgu, who was named Man of the Match.

Reflecting on the opening victory, head coach Kassim Ocansey noted that the team “could have been more clinical in front of goal.” This victory places the Black Starlets at the top of Group A as they prepare for their upcoming match against Benin.
