Ghana bauxite and aluminium development projects
Overview
The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) is advancing plans to develop the Nyinahin bauxite deposits in the Ashanti Region, which are estimated to be worth approximately $17.5 billion. The integrated project aims to build a refinery to process bauxite into alumina, which would then be converted into aluminium by the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) for downstream industries. The project is expected to create nearly 98,000 jobs.
In late October 2026, Russian aluminium producer Rusal signed a memorandum of understanding with GIADEC to develop bauxite mining and alumina processing operations at the Nyinahin deposit. The proposed joint venture targets an annual bauxite production of five million metric tonnes and a processing capacity of 1.2 million tonnes.
By early November 2026, the project began attracting further interest from foreign investors. Discussions were held between local officials, GIADEC representatives, and a delegation from Guinea, including ORG Technology, to secure partnerships for the extraction of the deposits.
