Ghana-Canada bilateral cooperation expansion

Overview

Ghanaian Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, initiated calls for enhanced cooperation between Canada and African nations during a policy roundtable in Ethiopia. She advocated for addressing structural barriers to economic inclusion, specifically focusing on affordable finance, trade involvement, and skills development for women entrepreneurs.

Following these discussions, Ghana and Canada signed a Letter of Intent in Ottawa to transition their relationship from traditional development assistance toward a commercially focused partnership. This framework targets strategic sectors including trade, mining, aviation, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, agribusiness, and railway development. The agreement also includes intentions to discuss defense cooperation, labor mobility, and scholarship opportunities, while committing to joint efforts regarding humanitarian crises in Sudan and Haiti, instability in the Sahel, and global issues such as climate justice and United Nations reforms.
