Ghana-China trade and zero-tariff policy engagement
Overview
Stakeholders in Ghana are exploring ways to maximize the benefits of China’s zero-tariff policy. During a roundtable organized by the Africa-China Centre for Policy and Advisory (ACCPA) and the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS Africa), participants proposed the establishment of a Ghana-China Zero-Tariff Fund. This fund is intended to assist exporters, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in overcoming financing constraints that hinder production and processing capabilities.
Discussions highlighted the need for financing to support the entire export value chain, citing the cashew sector as a specific area where mechanisms like contract farming finance and warehouse financing could be applied. Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Cong Song, noted that while the policy reduces costs, Ghanaian businesses must address institutional bottlenecks and align domestic production standards with Chinese market requirements to achieve commercial success.
