Ghana Education Service student storage policies

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has introduced new measures regarding student belongings in Senior High Schools (SHS) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS).

Initially, the GES launched the ‘EduPack’ initiative, managed by Prospectus Ghana Ltd., to distribute standardized packages to schools. This program was designed to reduce the amount of personal luggage students carry and to mitigate bedbug infestations associated with personal items.

Following this, the GES issued a directive prohibiting school heads from denying admission or boarding accommodation to students based on the type of personal storage containers they own. This order was prompted by reports of schools refusing students with metal trunks or wooden chop boxes that did not meet specific institutional preferences. Deputy Director-General Professor Smile Dzisi stated that such practices impose ‘unnecessary financial burdens’ on parents. While schools may still refuse items that are improperly sized or pose safety and health risks, the GES has mandated that all admitted students be treated fairly regardless of their economic circumstances.
