The fraud trial of former National Food Buffer Stock Company chief Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba has entered a new phase. On 4 July 2026 he was detained at Kotoka International Airport despite a High Court order that had permitted travel to the United Kingdom for specialist medical treatment. His lawyers filed contempt proceedings, alleging the arrest breached the court’s ruling and that no valid freeze on his bank accounts existed. The Attorney-General subsequently applied to set aside the travel permission, citing an alleged attempt by Aludiba to use a court order to withdraw money from a frozen Republic Bank account. The High Court struck out an ex-parte application to compel the Bureau of National Investigations to produce him on 9 July, and on 19 July prosecutors withdrew the motion to cancel the travel order, noting that the original order had expired on 12 July, effectively clearing Aludiba to travel. On 22 July the court narrowed the charge sheet, ordering amendment of only Counts 9 and 14 while retaining 20 counts alleging a loss of about GH¢50 million. On 29 July, Justice Francis A. Achibonga ordered the Attorney-General to disclose all relevant documents to ensure a fair trial regarding charges of theft, fraud, and money laundering. In a separate ruling that day, the court denied a request by Aludiba’s wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni, to travel abroad for medical treatment, ruling that the necessary care could be obtained in Ghana. A procedural dispute emerged in August regarding the legality of conducting substantive criminal trials during the judicial vacation. Defence teams petitioned the Chief Justice, arguing that vacation courts should only handle motions. On 17 August, the Accra High Court adjourned Aludiba’s trial until 25 August, pending a Supreme Court ruling on an injunction challenging the legality of these vacation-period hearings.
