Ghana healthcare infrastructure and maternal health updates
Overview
Efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and maternal health in Ghana have progressed through both private corporate initiatives and large-scale government programs.
Private sector contributions included the completion of a 60-bed Maternity and Child Health Block at Keta Municipal Hospital by the MTN Ghana Foundation, which contributed to an increase in antenatal attendance. Additionally, AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem commissioned a US$1.1 million, 60-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Tarkwa Municipal Hospital to address neonatal mortality rates.
Following these infrastructure developments, the Ghanaian government launched the Free Primary Health Care (FPHC) programme, backed by a GH¢443 million investment to retool health facilities. This initiative includes direct funding to district health directorates and the introduction of a new antenatal book to monitor pregnancy complications. To improve accountability, the Ghana Health Service is implementing unique security codes for staff identification, while the National Health Insurance Authority is moving toward a cashless revenue collection system.
