Ghana international diplomatic and economic engagement

Overview

During the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Ghana engaged in several diplomatic and economic initiatives aimed at strengthening international partnerships.

Initially, Ghana signed bilateral agreements with Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. The pact with Panama focuses on maritime affairs, cocoa production, trade, and technical assistance in the extractive sector. Additionally, an Air Services Agreement was signed with Trinidad and Tobago to improve air connectivity between the Caribbean and Africa.

President John Dramani Mahama furthered these efforts through high-level discussions with major American corporations. In exploratory talks with Amazon executives, including Senior Vice President David Zapolsky, discussions focused on expanding broadband connectivity across Africa to support digital education, healthcare, and e-commerce, aiming to position Ghana as a West African digital hub. These discussions specifically examined the potential role of Amazon’s low earth orbit (LEO) satellite project, Amazon Leo, to improve connectivity in rural and underserved areas. While no formal contract or deployment timeline has been announced, the initiative aligns with Ghana’s strategy to attract global technology investment.

Regarding the aviation sector, Mahama met with Boeing to discuss the revival of Ghana’s national airline. This proposed strategic partnership seeks to develop an aviation ecosystem through technical training, technology transfer, and the potential establishment of a regional Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub in the country.

Additionally, Mahama addressed the Ghanaian diaspora, urging members to transition from sending remittances for consumption to investing directly in domestic businesses. He also called for a national forum to address the regulation of new media platforms, such as TikTok, to combat misinformation.
