The National Cathedral project in Ghana has stalled, prompting various responses from religious leadership. Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, a former member of the project’s Board of Trustees, attributed the delay to a lack of commitment from Christians rather than corruption, stating, “The National Cathedral was not built, not because of corruption. I was right there. It was because we Christians are not serious.” He characterized the lack of progress as a result of believers being “selfish” and “greedy.” To address obstacles regarding funding and location, the Christian Council of Ghana established a technical committee representing various Christian groups. Council Chairman Rev. Enoch Nii Narh Thompson stated the committee was tasked with presenting recommendations to the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs within one month to inform a final decision by President John Dramani Mahama. The Council also called for the government to expedite a forensic audit and share the results with religious leaders. Following a period of uncertainty, President Mahama has decided to dissolve the Board of Trustees with immediate effect. In a letter signed by Sector Minister Mahama Ayariga, the Board was ordered to hand over the project site to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs by October 31, 2026. The Board must coordinate with the project consultant to finalize the handover. By October 2026, the government has reclaimed the site in Accra, with Minister Ayariga confirming the contractor was ordered to hand over the land. The site will remain under Ministry control while the Attorney-General reviews a forensic audit concerning expenditures from the previous administration of President Akufo-Addo. No further decisions regarding the site will be made until the Attorney-General provides advice based on those audit findings.
