Ghana National Cathedral project status

The National Cathedral project in Ghana has stalled, prompting various responses from religious leadership. Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, a former member of the project’s Board of Trustees, attributed the delay to a lack of commitment from Christians rather than corruption, stating, “The National Cathedral was not built, not because of corruption. I was right there. It was because we Christians are not serious.” He characterized the lack of progress as a result of believers being “selfish” and “greedy.”

In response to the impasse, the Christian Council of Ghana has formed a technical committee to address obstacles regarding the project’s funding and location. The committee, representing various Christian groups, is tasked with providing recommendations to the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs within one month. These findings are intended to inform a final decision by President John Dramani Mahama. Additionally, the Council has called for the government to expedite a forensic audit of the project and share the results with religious leaders.
