Ghana university remuneration and recruitment disputes

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has been involved in disputes regarding remuneration and academic management within the country’s higher education sector.

Initially, UTAG rejected claims from the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) regarding salary discrimination. UTAG argued that pay disparities reflect the distinct qualifications and responsibilities of academic versus administrative roles, calling for an independent review of the remuneration structure.

Subsequently, the University of Ghana chapter of UTAG warned that low salaries are contributing to an academic brain drain, making higher education careers less attractive compared to private sectors like law and medicine. This period also saw tension regarding recruitment, as UTAG-UG opposed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) decision to centralize faculty recruitment, advocating instead for individual universities to maintain control over their own academic talent development.

Recent developments indicate escalating instability across the tertiary sector. UTAG continues to warn that low remuneration makes academic roles unattractive to PhD holders, particularly in specialized fields where professionals prefer lucrative private practices. The conflict with GTEC persists, with UTAG arguing that centralized recruitment threatens academic freedom and institutional autonomy.

Governance crises have also emerged within teacher associations and specific institutions. The Technical University Teachers' Association of Ghana (TUTAG) is facing petitions from multiple chapters seeking to impeach national leadership over alleged constitutional breaches. Additionally, at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), UTAG has escalated a dispute regarding the appointment of Pro-Vice Chancellors and Deans to the University Council, claiming the current process undermines statutory frameworks and collegial governance.
