Ghanaian investigation into social media commentator
Overview
The Ghanaian National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has initiated investigations into an anonymous social media commentator known as ‘Ghana Jollof’ following unsavoury remarks made about political figures. The investigation drew criticism from Member of Parliament Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, who characterized the NIB’s attempt to summon political activists for identification as ‘the height of absurdity’ and a ‘public fishing expedition.’ He urged the agency to use digital forensics rather than relying on citizens.
As the situation progressed, concerns grew regarding the methods used to apprehend individuals linked to the commentator. Reports emerged of women being taken from their homes at night by individuals identifying as security operatives, an incident described by advisor Akosua Manu as having the ‘disturbing hallmarks of an abduction.’ In one instance, the midnight detention of Salomey Awity Baffoe in Techiman was not acknowledged by local police.
In response to these arrests, the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has called for the protection of constitutional rights. GBA President Efua Ghartey emphasized the need for reasonable bail and the presumption of innocence, while the association considered forming a Human Rights Watch Committee to monitor legal compliance and provide aid to suspects.
