Following the appointment of Gilbert a cabinet reshuffle by President John Dramani Mahama on August 7, 2026, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei as Ghana’s substantive Minister of Defence, the government has moved to restructure its security leadership. Upon taking office, Adjei pledged to adopt a “technology-led defense posture” to combat threats such as violent extremism, terrorism, maritime insecurity, cyber threats, and instability from the Sahel region. He emphasized that modernizing the Ghana Armed Forces requires more than new equipment; it necessitates investments in personnel welfare, logistics, maintenance, and the integration of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and unmanned systems. He also called for increased cooperation between national security agencies and international partners. In a parallel reorganization, President John Dramani Mahama approved structural changes to the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) to improve intelligence coordination and address administrative bottlenecks. coordination. Key appointments include retired Major General William Ayamdo as Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of Operations and (Operations), Yaw Donkor as Director of Intelligence and Research. Other leadership changes within the NSCS include Research, Adamu Saaka as Director of Logistics and Transport, Faustina Effah-Boadi as Officer in Charge of the Human Security Department, and retired DCOP Peter Ndekugri as Officer in Charge of the Special Investigations Unit. Additionally, ACP Alhassan Osman has been reassigned back to the Ghana Police Service command structure.
