Ghanaian nursing workforce international deployment

Overview

Ghana has entered into international agreements to facilitate the deployment of its nursing workforce to bolster healthcare sectors abroad.

In September 2026, the Government of Ghana and the City of Columbus, Ohio, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch the Ghana-Columbus Nursing Partnership Programme. This initiative aims to strengthen nursing education and establish formal employment pathways for qualified Ghanaian nurses in Columbus, while ensuring the protection of workers’ rights and promoting knowledge exchange.

Concurrently, a bilateral health cooperation agreement between Ghana and Jamaica has led to the arrival of an initial cohort of 43 specialist nurses in Jamaica. These professionals, with expertise in fields such as oncology, pediatrics, and mental health, are part of a larger plan to eventually deploy approximately 400 healthcare workers to Jamaican public hospitals over a four-year period.
