Ghanaian Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has taken steps to address both construction timelines and financial integrity within national infrastructure projects. In the Greater Accra Region, the Minister ordered contractors to accelerate work on the 19.5-kilometre Tema Roundabout to Tetteh Quarshie Interchange project by implementing day and night operations. He noted that while the project has advanced by approximately 10 percent and a main bridge was completed ahead of schedule, continuous work is necessary to minimize disruption. He suggested moving more disruptive activities to nighttime to align with the government’s 24-hour economy initiative. He also expressed frustration regarding slow progress on the 17-kilometre Tema-Aflao Road, directing contractors First Sky Construction and BHM to increase activity after observing little progress over four months. In the Savannah Region, Agbodza ordered an immediate reduction in the scope of work for two Chinese firms, China International Water and Electric Corporation and Poly Changda Engineering Company, due to insufficient mobilization on the Wenchi-Bole road project. Their assigned work will be reduced from 50 kilometres to 25 kilometres each, with the remaining sections assigned to new contractors. The original firms face a two-month monitoring period; failure to show improvement could result in total contract termination. Following an inspection of an access road project in the Ashanti Region, the Minister announced that the government is considering referring two quantity surveyors to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for investigation. This follows allegations that certain surveyors are attempting to inflate compensation claims for properties affected by road construction. In response to these systemic challenges, the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) and the Ministry of Roads and Highways have agreed to enhance collaboration to ensure compliance with the Land Act, 2020, and the 1992 Constitution.
