The hazelnut harvest in Turkey’s coastal regions has concluded, marking a transition from collection and drying to processing. Production costs have risen by at least 50% compared to the previous year, while market prices have reportedly declined by 40%, fluctuating between 170 and 200 TL. To cope with low pricing and high expenses, many producers are opting to process their crops into shelled hazelnuts, roasted products, or hazelnut paste rather than selling immediately to traders. ~~This trend is particularly noted among local consumers and expatriates seeking value-added products.~~ In Ordu, producers are increasingly turning to the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) due to a significant price gap between the state institution and the free market. While free market prices for 50-yield shelled hazelnuts hover around 180 TL per kilogram, the TMO has set its purchase price at 250 TL. Farmers are utilizing an appointment system to deliver products to TMO warehouses, where expert teams conduct quality controls and yield measurements. High-yield products can command even higher prices, with some producers reporting sales exceeding 260 TL per kilogram. ~~Structural challenges continue~~ In Samsun, the Çarşamba Chamber of Agriculture has advised producers to ~~threaten Turkey’s global market dominance,~~ pre-sort crops to avoid rejection at TMO procurement warehouses, where approximately 600 tons are being purchased daily. Officials warned that hazelnuts with high rates of rot are being returned to farmers. Additionally, the brown marmorated stink bug remains a renewed threat, necessitating continued pest control efforts through the winter months.
