Glider collision in Saratoga County

Overview

On a Friday afternoon in September 2026, a mid-air collision involving two gliders occurred near Edinburg in Saratoga County, New York. The aircraft involved were identified as a Schempp-Hirth Ventus and a Schleicher AS24. One aircraft managed to land safely at the nearby Plateau Sky Ranch Airport with the pilot uninjured.

The second aircraft crashed in a remote, wooded area off Sand Lake Road. The pilot of the crashed aircraft, later identified as 80-year-old James Morzillo of Saratoga Springs, was found deceased at the scene.

Reports indicate the gliders had been assisted into the air by an engine plane from Saratoga County Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration and New York State Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
