Global agricultural impacts from extreme weather

Overview

Extreme weather patterns are causing significant disruptions to agricultural production across multiple regions.

In Paraguay, El Niño-driven tornadoes and hailstorms damaged over 170 hectares of horticultural crops, such as tomatoes and lettuce, impacting hundreds of families. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock launched a contingency plan to assist producers in several departments. Additionally, persistent heavy rains have complicated the 2026-2027 soybean campaign by creating excessive soil moisture and logistical difficulties due to damaged rural roads. In the Caazapá region, excessive rainfall has caused rivers to overflow, reducing grazing land and forcing livestock producers to adjust reproductive strategies and prioritize calf care.

In Mexico, Hurricane Polo devastated more than 1,500 hectares of melon and watermelon crops in the Guaymas and Empalme valleys of Sonora. Agricultural worker leader Agustín Urías Arenas noted the hurricane could leave “hundreds or even thousands of day laborers without work,” threatening local economic circulation.

In Bolivia, the Cochabamba department is facing severe drought. In municipalities like Pasorapa and Omereque, water shortages have caused the death of at least 100 cattle and put approximately 30,000 more at risk, leading to declarations of emergency and disaster.

In Europe, weather variations have led to contrasting outcomes: Spain has experienced a rapid corn harvest due to stable conditions and adequate irrigation in provinces like León, while France faces a historic 50% decline in corn production caused by drought and heatwaves.
