Global and U.S. cryptocurrency ownership trends

Overview

A Cornell University study indicates that global Bitcoin ownership among adults in 25 surveyed countries is 13.2%. While awareness is high at 90.1%, actual understanding of the asset is low, with only 13% of those aware of Bitcoin correctly identifying its 21 million supply cap. Ownership rates vary by region, with El Salvador leading at 28.6% and Japan showing lower engagement at 7.4%.

In the United States, cryptocurrency ownership has seen a decline. According to Gallup, ownership among investors fell to 11% from 17% in 2025, while ownership among the general adult population dropped to 9% from 14% the previous year. The most significant decrease occurred among men aged 18 to 49.

Despite high ownership rates among affluent individuals in the U.S., U.K., and Argentina, research suggests limited integration of digital assets into long-term financial or retirement planning. Obstacles to deeper integration include security concerns, high fees, and platform complexity.
