Global automotive market transition to alternative fuels

Overview

The global automotive market is undergoing a significant transition away from traditional internal combustion engines toward alternative fuels. In the first half of 2026, gasoline-only vehicles accounted for 49% of global new car sales, totaling 20.25 million units. This marks the first time since the 1920s that pure gasoline-powered vehicles have fallen below a 50% market share, representing a 10% decrease compared to the same period in 2025.

This shift is driven by the growth of electrified vehicles. In 2025, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that over 20 million electric vehicles were sold globally, accounting for one in every four new car sales. By the first half of 2026, hybrid vehicles reached an 18% market share (7.27 million units), while battery electric vehicles (BEVs) grew by 12% to capture 17% of the market (6.87 million units).

Regional developments continue to shape this landscape. In Europe, electric vehicle sales grew by more than 30 percent in 2025, representing approximately 28 percent of all new car sales. In Vietnam, the two-wheeler sector saw an 8.9% year-on-year increase in the first eight months of 2026, with manufacturer VinFast entering the top 15 largest global motorcycle manufacturers. To support infrastructure, the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade introduced new regulations, including Circular 61/2026/TT-BCT and QCVN 32:2026/BCT, to standardize electric vehicle charging stations. These regulations, which aim to ensure technical compatibility and safety, are set to take effect on July 1, 2027.
