Global autonomous vehicle industry development
Overview
The autonomous vehicle industry continues its rapid expansion through new commercial partnerships and technological breakthroughs. Tesla has showcased its vision-only Cybercab robotaxi in Tokyo, utilizing eight cameras and AI rather than LiDAR. However, the company faces investor uncertainty and an NHTSA audit inquiry regarding the self-certification of approximately 1,000 vehicles following a presentation in Austin.
In a separate collaborative effort, Lucid, Uber, and Nuro aim to deploy over 35,000 robotaxis globally within six years using the Lucid Gravity electric SUV and a sensor suite including high-resolution cameras, solid-state LiDAR, and radar. Additionally, a partnership between inDrive, Pony.ai, and Nvidia has been established to test robotaxis in Astana, Kazakhstan, starting in early 2027. This pilot will use Nvidia’s Hyperion platform and Halos safety system to test autonomous capabilities under challenging winter conditions.
In Japan, the sector is moving toward large-scale deployment. Waymo, GO, and Nihon Kotsu have scheduled the launch of Level 4 driverless robotaxis in Tokyo by 2027, aiming to scale to approximately 100 vehicles. Technological advancements were also noted at the Japan Mobility Show Bizweek 2026, where Nissan demonstrated Level 2++ technology using Wayve AI Driver software for its Elgrand model, and Subaru showcased cloud-based cooperative automated driving. Furthermore, a Nagoya University project unveiled the ‘Feather Inverter,’ a power electronics component significantly lighter and smaller than the Tesla Cybertruck inverter.
