Global blood supply shortages and donor appeals
Overview
Canadian Blood Services has launched a joint appeal alongside the UK’s NHS Blood and Transplant and the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood to encourage regular donation. This initiative follows significant declines in blood supplies across Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia, with some regions reporting drops of up to 30 per cent in recent months.
In Canada, supply levels fell by nearly 20 per cent in June. Although a subsequent call to action increased donation bookings by 50 per cent and brought in over 6,700 new donors, officials emphasize that consistent, routine donations are necessary to maintain stable levels. Ryan Adams, Director of Development and Recruitment for Canadian Blood Services, noted that rising global demand for blood and plasma products makes this a worldwide challenge affecting critical healthcare components such as surgeries, cancer treatments, and trauma care.
