Global climate change and extreme weather patterns
Overview
Global climate change is driving rapid environmental shifts, characterized by significant ocean warming and extreme weather events. Reports from the Copernicus Marine service indicate substantial warming in the Arctic, where surface temperatures rose by 4.2 degrees Celsius between 1982 and 2024, averaging approximately one degree per decade. In the Kara Sea near Russian coasts, temperatures rose by 6.7 degrees Celsius over 40 years. This has contributed to a 17% reduction in Arctic sea ice extent over 42 years, losing an average of 490,000 square kilometers per decade. Pierre Biell of Mercator Ocean International noted, “The message is very clear. The ocean is changing fast.”
These shifts have resulted in diverse weather disruptions. In Greece, the National Meteorological Service issued emergency bulletins for eastern and southern regions, including Crete, warning of heavy rain, storms, and winds reaching 8 to 9 Beaufort. In Europe, rising temperatures have caused severe droughts and record-breaking sea surface temperatures; the Atlantic and Mediterranean reached historic highs in July, with average extratropical ocean surface temperatures hitting 20.96 °C. Experts warn these shifts threaten biodiversity and could disrupt ocean circulation patterns like the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
Other regional impacts include an extratropical cyclone in Chile causing hail and a preliminary tornado, as well as heavy rainfall and flood risks in the central Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. In the Mediterranean, biologist Oriol Palom warns of a “catastrophic scenario” involving more frequent heatwaves and ‘dana’ storm events. Additionally, in Paraguay, insurance specialists are analyzing how to adapt markets to manage risks from flooding, power outages, and infrastructure damage.
