Global electric bus fleet transitions

Overview

The transition to electric bus fleets is progressing at different rates in different regions. In Bermuda, the Department of Public Transportation is actively expanding its fleet, recently receiving 10 electric buses from Golden Dragon Bus Company. The government aims to reach 110 electric buses by 2027 and achieve 100 per cent electrification by 2030.

Conversely, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York faces significant challenges in meeting its 2040 zero-emissions mandate. A state audit by Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli identified obstacles including infrastructure gaps, a shortage of qualifying manufacturers, and reliability concerns. MTA Chairperson Janno Lieber noted that the agency has slowed orders because existing electric models “break down too frequently” and have “not been up to standards.” Additionally, the transition in New York is complicated by high costs, with electric buses estimated to cost approximately 60 per cent more than diesel alternatives.
