In Burkina Faso, the government increased diesel prices from 675 FCFA to 750 FCFA per liter, citing Middle East tensions and a rising US dollar. To manage the impact on consumers and combat market speculation, authorities have implemented price caps on essential goods like rice and cement. In Senegal, the government implemented fuel price increases effective August 15, 2026. Supercarburant rose by 70 FCFA to 990 FCFA per litre, while diesel increased by 75 FCFA to 755 FCFA per litre. Authorities attributed the adjustment to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, noting that since conflicts began in February 2026, international diesel and supercarburant prices have risen by 69% and 61%, respectively. The Senegalese government reported absorbing over 245 billion FCFA in subsidies since the start of the year. Officials warned that without these adjustments, 2026 energy subsidies were projected to reach 1,069 billion FCFA, far exceeding the 250 billion FCFA allocated in the national budget.
