Global EV cathode material market trends

Overview

The global electric vehicle cathode material market is experiencing a significant shift toward Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) materials. According to SNE Research, LFP loading reached 65.4% of the total market between January and August, growing by 31.8% year-on-year and outpacing ternary (NCx) materials. This trend is especially notable outside of China, where LFP's share rose to 34.9%. While Chinese suppliers maintain a dominant 87.3% market share, South Korean and Japanese suppliers have seen their shares decline.

In response to these market shifts, companies like L&F are diversifying their technological offerings. At the 2026 Daegu Future Mobility Expo, L&F showcased its third-generation high-density LFP cathode material, designed to improve energy density while remaining cost-competitive. L&F has also initiated mass production of LFP materials through its subsidiary, L&F Plus, and is researching next-generation technologies for sodium-ion and all-solid-state batteries to build non-China-centric supply chains.
