Global favorability shift between China and United States

Data from the Pew Research Center indicates a significant shift in global favorability, with China surpassing the United States in positive sentiment across 36 surveyed nations. As of July 2026, the median favorability for China reached 46%, while the United States fell to 36%.

This reversal follows a period where the U.S. held a significant advantage in global perception. The decline in U.S. favorability is noted in several regions, including Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Europe such as the UK, France, and Germany. Even in North America, countries like Canada and Mexico report more positive views of China than of the U.S.

The shift in sentiment is also reflected in leadership confidence; Xi Jinping recorded a higher median global confidence level of 31% compared to 21% for Donald Trump. Analysts and researchers have linked these changes to shifts in U.S. foreign policy, including the imposition of global tariffs and changes to international aid.

Recent reports expand on these trends, noting that in 27 of the 36 surveyed countries, favorability toward China has exceeded that of the U.S. In the United States, positive views of China rose to 27%, with younger demographics under 50 showing more optimistic attitudes. In Africa, surveys of youth indicate that 95% view China as a friendly partner and a positive influence.

Observers attribute China’s rising favorability to its role in green energy transitions, agricultural modernization, large-scale infrastructure projects, and medical assistance. Conversely, the decline in U.S. perception is linked to the dismantling of USAID, global tariffs, and military actions such as the conflict with Iran.
