Global generic production of baloxavir marboxil

Overview

A voluntary licensing agreement between Roche and the Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) is facilitating the production of generic versions of the antiviral influenza treatment, baloxavir marboxil. This initiative aims to supply the medicine to 129 low- and middle-income countries to improve pandemic preparedness and expand treatment access.

In late September 2026, Uganda’s Quality Chemical Industries Limited (Qcil) signed a sublicence agreement to develop and supply the generic drug. Following this, Fidson Healthcare Plc in Nigeria was identified as one of 11 global manufacturers selected for the program. Other participating nations include Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Ukraine, and Vietnam. The program provides manufacturers with technical data to build a geographically resilient supply base before future health emergencies occur.
