Global halal economy strategic expansion
Overview
Several nations are developing strategic frameworks to integrate into the global halal economy as a means of economic diversification.
In Bangladesh, officials are prioritizing the halal sector to reduce the country’s reliance on the ready-made garment industry. Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir noted that the sector has expanded beyond food and beverages to include pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, logistics, finance, and digital technology. This move is part of a broader effort to diversify the export base as the nation prepares to transition from its Least Developed Country status.
Similarly, the Nigerian federal government has launched a national strategy to transform the country from a consumer into a major producer and exporter of halal products. The initiative aims to mobilize $12 billion in capital to tap into the global market. The strategy, coordinated by the Nigeria Halal Economy Strategy Implementation Committee, leverages the nation’s agricultural resources and manufacturing capacity to capture value across various sectors, including Islamic finance, tourism, and digital commerce.
