Global impact of atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is characterized as a chronic inflammatory skin disease driven by genetic susceptibility, immune system dysregulation, and skin barrier dysfunction. The condition often manifests early in life, with up to 90% of cases appearing before age five, though it can persist into adulthood.

In Portugal, the disease affects an estimated 2% to 5% of the population, including roughly 34,000 individuals with moderate to severe cases. The most debilitating symptom is intense itching, which can lead to sleep deprivation and impact professional and emotional well-being.

In Taiwan, research highlights the significant economic and psychological strain on patients. Approximately 28% of patients with moderate-to-severe cases face monthly out-of-pocket medical costs exceeding 20,000 TWD, which can rise above 25,000 TWD when including ancillary expenses. This represents about 63% of the median monthly salary in the country. Furthermore, 72% of Taiwanese patients have consulted at least six different doctors, reflecting high levels of medical uncertainty. Patients in this region prioritize visible skin clearance and itch relief, noting that the condition imposes an ‘invisible burden’ on their quality of life.
