Overview

Various nations are implementing Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) contactless tolling technologies to facilitate seamless highway travel.

In Indonesia, Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo is accelerating a second trial of the MLFF system. This follows an initial trial that failed to yield conclusive results. If successful, the project will enter a semi-commercial phase where technology is tested under conditions closer to actual operation.

In India, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is utilizing a combination of RFID-based FASTag, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), and AI analytics to allow vehicles to pass through charging points without stopping. While tenders have been launched for 104 additional toll plazas, the Indian government has opted for this integrated approach over satellite-based collection due to concerns regarding security, privacy, and operational control. A Japanese delegation recently inspected these systems in Mundka-Bakkarwala as part of the 12th India–Japan Joint Working Group Meeting on Roads and Road Transportation.
