Global lifeguard rescue operations

Overview

Various lifeguard teams have performed critical rescues across different environments, including rivers, pools, and coastal waters.

In Zimbabwe, the 501 Lifeguard team participated in a coordinated dive operation to retrieve a body following a drowning in a river with “deep, murky conditions.” In Newark, New Jersey, lifeguards at Saint Peter’s Park Recreation Center saved a 13-year-old boy who suffered a seizure in a pool, performing life-saving compressions and ventilations.

In Italy, maritime emergencies have increased across several coastal regions due to strong currents and rough seas. Following a previous incident at Lido Sporting where a lifeguard was nearly swept away, new reports indicate a surge in rescues. In Baia Domizia, a lifeguard risked his life to save two youths, while in Fiumicino, lifeguards rescued an 11-year-old boy caught in a rip current. Other interventions occurred in Capaccio Paestum and near the Scala dei Turchi involving swimmers and SUP users.

Additional maritime incidents in Italy included the rescue of eight people after a boat capsized in Licata by the Guardia di Finanza, and the rescue of five people after a recreational boat sank in Castellammare del Golfo. Medical emergencies were also noted, such as a crew member collapsing on a ferry in Casamicciola and a 14-year-old girl suffering a medical episode in Castel Volturno. Separately, criminal activity was reported in Bibione, where an 80-year-old man was allegedly pushed into a lagoon by two youths.

Recent maritime safety efforts in Italy include the Coast Guard conducting extensive inspections under ‘Mare e Laghi sicuri 2026’. These operations have resulted in significant fines for beach establishments in Crotone for failing to provide required safety services. Recent rescues also include the saving of two girls near the Scala dei Turchi.
