Global lithium battery recycling and remanufacturing efforts

Overview

Developments in the lithium battery sector are focusing on the establishment of recycling and remanufacturing ecosystems to support the green transition.

In Vietnam, R3 Lithium, a US-based company, has entered discussions with Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Văn Thắng to build a battery recycling and essential mineral processing ecosystem. The initiative aims to leverage Vietnam’s rapid transport electrification and its 2050 Net Zero commitment to move beyond simple supply chains toward a comprehensive reuse model for critical minerals.

In Europe, French company VoltR has secured €22 million in funding to industrialize the production of second-life batteries. This capital, provided through Bpifrance and Decathlon Pulse, will allow the company to scale from proof-of-concept to industrial deployment, including expanding its factory in Verrières-en-Anjou and increasing production capacity sixfold. The model emphasizes a circular economy by repurposing used lithium batteries to reduce reliance on new raw materials.
