Global narcotics enforcement and seizures
Overview
Global law enforcement agencies continue to conduct operations targeting the trafficking of cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamine. In early September 2026, authorities in Colombia intercepted cocaine and marijuana in multiple locations, including an international airport and a high-speed vehicle pursuit. Concurrently, U.S. agencies in New York and Texas seized hundreds of kilograms of cocaine valued at millions of dollars. In Japan, police arrested individuals for the possession and sale of marijuana. In a separate joint operation between the United States and Sri Lanka, officials seized approximately 463 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine at the Colombo Port. The shipment, valued at an estimated $21 million, was concealed in bath towels within a shipping container. Authorities identified the shipment as part of a Pakistani drug network using Colombo as a transit hub for international markets.
Recent operations have expanded the scope of seizures. In Spain, the Guardia Civil dismantled distribution points in Malagón and Fuente el Fresno through ‘Operation Calarca’, resulting in five arrests and the seizure of cocaine, marijuana, and weapons. In Valencia, authorities discovered 8.2 kilograms of liquid cocaine hidden inside shampoo bottles at an airport. Other Spanish seizures included a cannabis plantation in Mondariz. In Colombia, the National Police intercepted 428 kilograms of marijuana in Antioquia and prevented a 5.6-kilogram cocaine shipment at Rionegro International Airport. In the United States, the NYPD and DEA seized 263 kilograms of cocaine, valued at approximately $10 million, from a Queens storage facility, while U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized over 100 kilograms of cocaine at international bridges in Laredo, Texas. Additionally, 11.2 kilograms of cocaine were found hidden in ginger sacks in Pangoa, Peru. Law enforcement efforts have also increasingly targeted illegal armaments.
