Reports from Portugal and Brazil highlight the significant public health impact of osteoporosis, particularly as populations age.

In Portugal, research indicates a prevalence rate of approximately 15%, surpassing previous estimates of 10%. The condition disproportionately affects women, impacting 17% of the female population compared to 2.6% of men, largely due to bone mass loss following menopause. Health authorities recommend bone densitometry for women starting at age 65.

In Brazil, the condition affects more than 33 million people aged 60 or older, with projections suggesting this number will exceed 40 million by 2030. Similar to the findings in Portugal, gender is a critical factor; women face risks linked to post-menopausal estrogen drops after age 50, while men typically experience declines in testosterone around age 70. Medical experts in Brazil suggest screening for women at age 65 and men at age 70, noting that while genetics influence much of bone mass, lifestyle factors such as physical activity and calcium intake remain significant.
