Global seasonal influenza vaccination efforts

Overview

Health authorities in the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, and Australia continue to manage seasonal influenza preparedness and rising case numbers.

In the UK, the Health Security Agency previously noted lower vaccine uptake among primary school children, prompting school immunisation sessions. In Australia, the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District reported more than 1,300 confirmed cases in August, nearly triple the July figures. Dr. Bart Willems noted that while many associate flu season with early winter, surveillance shows increasing activity across New South Wales, including rising emergency department presentations.

In the UAE, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has urged residents to vaccinate, noting the vaccine can provide up to ‘90 per cent protection against clinical illness in healthy adults’. The 2026–27 campaign targets priority groups such as pregnant women, children, the elderly, and healthcare workers. Dr. Malaz Yabrodi advised vaccination should occur before the expected surge in December and January, as immunity takes approximately two weeks to develop.

Medical professionals in the UAE have also reported an early wave of influenza A infections following school reopenings. Some schools have reported cases across various year levels, leading to advice that symptomatic children remain home until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours without medication. Pediatricians noted that symptoms, including high fever and fatigue, can last between 7 to 10 days.
