Global shipping rate increases for South American routes
Overview
Major shipping companies have announced significant rate increases affecting routes connected to South America.
On October 5, Maersk announced a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) of US$ 1,000 per container for dry cargo shipments from Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina to the United States and Canada, effective November 5, 2026. Maersk also revised its Origin and Destination Handling Charges for various Brazilian ports, citing increased operational and port-related costs.
Following this, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd announced a general rate increase (GRI) of US$ 1,000 per container for routes from Asia to the South American east coast, effective October 15. This adjustment covers dry, refrigerated, and out-of-gauge cargo. The hike follows a period of rising containerized import volumes in Brazil, including a 21.6% increase in imports from China between January and July.
