Global solar panel price increases and market volatility

Overview

Solar panel prices are facing upward pressure due to shifts in Chinese policy and rising material costs. In the Czech Republic, prices increased by approximately 31% since December, driven by higher costs for silver, copper, and aluminium, alongside the expiration of a 9% Chinese export VAT rebate in April.

In August 2026, China’s decision to cancel subsidies for the solar sector has reinforced expectations of rising panel prices, potentially leading to price equalization between solar panels and battery technologies.

During the fourth week of August 2026, the Chinese market showed mixed trends. While solar cell prices saw significant double-digit declines between 11.8% and 19.7%, solar wafer prices increased by 4.2% to 24.4% week-on-week. Mainstream TOPCon module prices also rose, with the OPIS Chinese Module Marker for modules below 645W increasing 2.86% to $0.108/W FOB China, a movement attributed to rising upstream production costs.

Despite manufacturers raising offer prices, actual transaction levels for mainstream modules have remained stagnant due to weak demand. Market volatility is also being linked to upcoming U.S. Section 232 tariffs scheduled for December 4, which include minimum import prices for ingots, wafers, cells, and modules, as well as tariffs on polysilicon derivatives.
