Global spinal health awareness and prevention
Overview
Medical experts are advocating for proactive spinal care and lifelong physical activity to combat the rising global prevalence of low back pain. Projections suggest the number of people affected by back pain could increase from 619 million in 2020 to 843 million by 2050.
To mitigate these risks, specialists recommend various interventions, including water training to relieve spinal pressure and strengthening the feet to improve overall stability and alignment. During World Spine Day observances in Warsaw, Professor Robert Gasik noted that spinal health involves more than just the absence of pain, emphasizing that the spine is designed for movement rather than static loading.
Key recommendations include implementing ergonomic adjustments in workplaces and schools, taking frequent micro-breaks to avoid prolonged static positions, and changing sitting positions regularly. Physiotherapist Agata Goldman-Madaj suggested simple desk exercises, such as torso rotations, to mitigate sedentary work effects. Experts also noted that spinal issues in one area may stem from stiffness in other regions, such as the hips or thoracic spine.
Furthermore, experts identified walking speed as a critical indicator of physical well-being and longevity. A decrease in pace after age 50 may signal physical frailty or a higher risk of falls. To preserve mobility, specialists recommend joint mobilization, strength training, and interval walking. While degenerative changes seen on scans do not always require surgery, specialists warn that symptoms such as limb weakness or loss of bladder control necessitate urgent medical attention.
