Goiás water and environmental regulation

The state of Goiás is implementing new regulatory frameworks concerning water and environmental management. In August 2026, the state established Joint Normative Resolution No. 09/2026, which mandates specific targets for water supply and sewage services. This regulation focuses on service coverage, water quality, and distribution losses, particularly within the West Basic Sanitation Microregion, with a specific goal to keep water loss at or below 216 liters per connection per day.

Following these service mandates, industry and agricultural leaders met with state officials in September 2026 to advocate for streamlined environmental licensing and water rights processes. Representatives from the Federation of Industries of the State of Goiás (Fieg) and the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of Goiás (Faeg) expressed concerns regarding lengthy wait times for licensing, such as the one-year period for eucalyptus biomass areas. In response, the State Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development (Semad) is exploring the use of automation and artificial intelligence to reduce the analysis period for the Declaration of Enterprise Activity (DAE) from 70 to 30 days.
