Goldman Sachs market and operational outlook

Overview

Goldman Sachs has issued various warnings regarding market performance and rising operational costs. Initially, analysts noted significant pressure on consumer stocks, with retail groups underperforming the market by over 5% in August. This decline was linked to waning household confidence caused by inflation and high gasoline prices, leading hedge funds to reduce retail stock exposure to multi-year lows.

CEO David Solomon has since signaled a mixed outlook for the third quarter. While the equities division remains ‘very strong,’ the fixed income, currencies, and commodities (FICC) business is expected to be slightly softer compared to previous quarters.

Regarding expenditures, the firm anticipates non-compensation costs will increase by more than $500 million sequentially. This rise is attributed to higher transaction expenses and accelerated investments in technology, specifically artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure.

Conversely, the asset and wealth management (AWM) division continues to show robust growth, performing above original targets. Management and other fees have grown at an annual rate of 12% since 2021, with assets under supervision surpassing the $4 trillion mark.
