Google Analytics 4 AI traffic reporting updates
Overview
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) has introduced a native AI Assistant traffic channel to its Default Channel Group, a change effective May 13, 2026. This update enables marketers to identify traffic originating from recognized AI tools—such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, and Grok—within standard acquisition reporting.
Previously, isolating this specific traffic required the use of manual, regex-based custom channel definitions. While GA4 now provides this native grouping, third-party tools like BrightEdge Analytics Reporting offer more granular visibility by separating AI traffic by individual engines, page groups, and specific pages, as well as providing benchmarking against Organic, Paid, Direct, and Social channels.
