Google AI data center project and expansion in Andhra
Overview
Google and the Adani conglomerate are developing a $15 billion AI data center hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. While the project is expected to create up to 188,000 jobs, it has faced significant opposition from local activists and non-profits like Green Visakha.
Protesters have raised concerns regarding the facility’s impact on the local water supply and its proximity to the Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to leopards and pangolins. Critics argue the center will exacerbate existing water stress in a region where demand exceeds supply. Some demonstrators have used slogans such as “We cannot drink DATA” to highlight these resource concerns.
In response to the mounting pressure, Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh addressed the Assembly, stating that drinking water for human consumption will not be diverted to the facility. The government has proposed using separate pipeline systems for excess water and dedicated power grids to prevent impacts on the local electricity supply for residents.
As the project moves forward under the “Bharat AI Shakti” vision with investments planned between 2026 and 2030, Google has defended its environmental strategy. Representative Alexander Smith stated that the facility will utilize advanced air-cooling technology rather than traditional water-based systems to minimize its footprint. Smith noted that water usage would be largely restricted to non-cooling purposes, making the footprint comparable to a standard office building. Google has also committed to replenishing 120% of the water consumed for non-cooling requirements by 2030 through rainwater catchment and groundwater recharge infrastructure.
Expanding the region's digital infrastructure, the Andhra Pradesh government has approved two additional major data center projects in the Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts. These projects represent a combined proposed investment of ₹1.44 lakh crore with a total capacity of 1,486 MW.
