Google Pixel 11 camera and software feature development
Google is addressing criticisms regarding the artificial appearance of Pixel smartphone photography by introducing a new feature for the upcoming Pixel 11. Historically, the series has utilized aggressive HDR processing that users claimed resulted in images looking “overly smooth, plastic, or like digital paintings.” To resolve this, Google introduced ‘Camera Looks’, a tool integrated directly into the image processing pipeline. This feature allows users to select specific visual styles at the moment of capture rather than applying post-capture filters. The system offers four base styles—Original, Natural, Shadows, and Vanilla—as well as six presets including ‘Editorial’, ‘Velvet’, ‘Classic’, ‘Digi’, ‘Black Tie’, and ‘Minimal’. The ‘Digi’ preset is designed to replicate the lo-fi aesthetic of early 2000s compact cameras. Users can manually fine-tune settings such as grain, warmth, and contrast. This update marks a shift toward offering more realistic textures and lighting as an alternative to the highly processed look of previous generations. Additionally, the Pixel 11 Pro XL features an upgraded 5x telephoto camera with a larger sensor to support these new software capabilities. Following the release of Dxomark sample images, early observations of the Pixel 11 Pro suggest a “slight improvement in the watercolor effect” previously observed in 12MP photos. However, some users have noted a lack of significant dynamic changes despite the hardware sensor update. Discussions have also extended to the device’s physical design. With the launch of the Pixel 11 series and Pixel Camera v11.0, Google introduced ‘Magic Capture’. This AI-driven feature, powered by Gemini, analyzes real-time video to automatically identify and save high-quality 12MP still images of key moments. On Pro models, users can utilize Video Boost to record these sessions in 4K 10-bit HDR, though standard resolution is capped at 1080p. Despite these advancements, the software update has drawn criticism regarding its user interface.
