Google Pixel software and feature developments

Overview

Google has established varying software support lifecycles for its Pixel hardware. The Pixel 8 family and newer Pixel 9 and 10 series receive seven years of major operating system upgrades and security patches, with some support extending to 2033. Older models like the Pixel 6 and 7 families follow a five-year policy, while devices from the original 2016 Pixel through the Pixel 5a are considered obsolete. As Android 17 rolls out, users of older hardware often utilize custom ROMs to access newer platforms.

Recent developments for Pixel devices include upcoming AI-driven features and hardware customization. Code found in the Android 17 QPR2 beta suggests a feature codenamed ‘catsmile’ that uses generative AI to transform static photos into animated wallpapers. Additionally, the HiLight Plus application has launched for the Pixel 11 Pro series, allowing users to expand the functionality of the rear LED to include custom colors and patterns for specific contacts and applications.
