Gordie Howe International Bridge completion

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, a $5.7 billion infrastructure project connecting Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, has officially opened. The 2.5-kilometer cable-stayed structure features six vehicle lanes and dedicated paths for pedestrians and cyclists. Managed by the Bridging North America consortium, the bridge will operate as a toll facility under a 30-year concession.

The project is part of a decade-long development effort that includes road improvements such as the Michigan Interchange and connections to Canada’s Herb Gray Parkway. While intended to enhance manufacturing logistics and reduce border wait times, the opening occurs amidst trade and tariff tensions between the United States and Canada.

Historical context for the corridor includes its role during the Prohibition era, when the Windsor-Detroit region served as a primary route for alcohol smuggling. Financial discussions regarding the bridge have involved complex agreements where Canada was expected to cover 100% of construction costs in exchange for retaining all toll revenue until costs were recouped, after which tolls would be split equally between the two nations.
